Disfigurement of Flesh - 2011 Promo

This four piece out of Russia seems to have some cool art and a full length about to be released.  They seem to have a decent following already and, being a Russian slam outfit, I was excited to hear what they were like.   As a whole (two songs) this is ‘ok’ at most.   I was left wanting much more, but this is a 6:00 minute promo.  Keep in mind that two of these four guys are listed as vocalists.  The vocals are one of my biggest complaints.  It actually sounds like a cement brick being dragged across the road, with very little variety or range.  “Intracolonic Convulsions” starts with a slower blasting tremolo riff that goes right into a simple, generic slam and the vocals are just too…. blah.  The band said they abandoned lyrical themes (lyrics) in hopes to better use the vocals as an ‘instrument’.  Yeah, I get that, but I don’t like it here.  If you are not going to use lyrics with these kind of vocals, I think a lot can still be done to make it less boring.

'Intracolonic' actually gets better as you go, gaining momentum halfway through by utilizing simple double bass drumming and catchy guitar riffs over top.   Other than these really simple parts, which are still nice, the drum programming is pretty creative.   I just cannot get past the vocals.   “Moral Post-Rape Trauma” is a much better song with simple slamming parts and a pretty cool part starting at 1:40.   A lot of cool stuff going on with the bass guitar, too.  I guess I have been a little too harsh in this review.   Overall, I like everything but the vocals.   I am excited to hear what their full length, “Pychotonic Abnormal Dismemberment” will sound like and I will happily review the full length when I get it.

7 H. Target - Japan Body Hammer -2010

This Russian slam/noise/grind outfit put out "Japan Body Hammer" in 2010 and to my knowledge hadn’t been up to too much else.  Then their guitarist posted THIS VIDEO.  They also posted two new songs from their upcoming EP on their myspace page.  I had actually forgotten about this band and how much I liked them when I first heard them.   I love the new material I am hearing from 7 H. Target.   I was already very hopeful and excited for new music from these guys, and the two new tracks just showed that they had some very good stuff on the way.   Let’s not jump the gun though, how about Japan Body Hammer?

7 H. Target keep things very fun and interesting, experimenting with wanky guitar and bass sounds that are probably not appreciated or welcome by most brutal death fans, but should be.  Please give Japan Body Hammer a listen!

"Vortex Coming With Tetsuo" has an intro that reminded me of Nine Inch Nails, not a bad thing.  This track has weird guitar work throughout accompanied by equally weird vocals.  Also, not a bad thing, keeps you on your toes and, for me, made me want to go on listening to see what else was in store.  The drums sound pretty bad when you start this album but they grow on you and you start to realize that the drums are one of the best parts.  Right around 2:40, this track seems to come to a boiling point with a fast riff bringing everything to a tense buildup that is soon resolved.

Then the title track comes in with a very cool sample that made me smile going directly into an almost bouncy riff with unique vocals.   This is all punctuated by simple yet very creative drumming.   About a minute into this song it sounds like the vocalist goes under water, or is possibly actually gurgling some water.   It is great.  Then comes another great sample from Tetsuo-Iron Man.  A repetitive buildup takes you to a very strange noise at 2:48.  One of the small but huge sort of things that I love about this band.   The vocals get progressively deeper until the end of this track.  This vocalist is very good.

"The World is Mine" is a prime example of how tight and groovy this band is.  Full of creative riffs and even more creative, unique drums and vocals.  The bass guitar stands out on this whole album as being way more apart of the songwriting than usual.  Overall, you can tell that they had tons of fun with this track.

"Metal + Flesh" kicks off with a pretty straightforward catchy riff, although my favorite drum fills on the album thus far, leading to an awesome vocally driven section.  Then at 1:10 comes an awesome change that reminds me of old, old See You Next Tuesday, which actually was good.  This is how you take simple riffs and execute them creatively.  My favorite part of this track though starts at 2:00 and it is the tempo changes with the gutturals behind them.  Then comes a really cool, sort of marching riff with drums reminiscent of Devourment.

The song “Technosex” was the first time I found myself saying “OK, that’s a little much.”  The guitar wankery and squeals got to me a bit here.  For a song that is almost two and a half minutes long, nothing grabbed me and I just did not think that it fit in.
"Drillpenis" on the other hand fit quite well in this album!   Opening riff is great with tremolo high notes and then some drumming that actually made me smile.  This track also has some of the best vocals.   The drums make this track funny or awesome or awesomely fun!  Nonetheless a great way to end.

Internal Amputation - Slam Gang - 2012 Demo - Alengka Management

Internal Amputation is a relatively new four piece Indonesian brutal death metal band.  Their sound reminds me of a mix of a few of my favorites.  I cannot seem to put a name to it, but it is definitely worth checking out.  Technical and tight drumming and guitar riffs that are solidified by the backbone of the bass guitar.  Simple but awesome vocals, reminiscent of Vulvectomy.  Also, some slams that get pretty slow and pretty repetitive but manage to keep you interested.

There are three songs on this demo, two of which begin with samples.  The samples are not too long and they work well with the vibe of the demo.  The guitar in particular is very creative and at times reminds me of totally different genres of music!  “Defectus In Utero” has some crazy awesome guitar riffs, and then drops into a groovy, slammy outro.  This demo has an impressively professional sound.  I cannot wait for more.  For a band’s first release, this is pretty amazing.

Disarticulating Extinguishment - Psalms Of Wrath - 2011 Imbecil Entertainment

Disarticulating Extinguishment is a young Brutal Death band out of Russia.  This E.P. showcases their unique approach to bringing creativity into their songwriting.   Some is very good, some is not.   Their name though, roughly translating to ‘putting an end to something by separating bones’, is awesome.  The parts of this album that are not as good are still good, it’s just that there is some really great stuff on here, so I am being picky.

'Righteous Prosecutor' is a short track with very creative drums and some low tones and harmonics accompany us to a very bad ending.   It just seems to quickly fade away and end with a sample that I cannot understand.
'Noisome Pestilence' starts with a cool bass line and very mechanical sounding drums.  Slow riffs pound forward with lower harmonics than I am used to hearing, which is good.  This track is very consistent/almost boring until a weird clean guitar break leading into a slow, chugging, bouncy groove over saturated with vocals.

"Heathens’ Foredoom" opens with what I will call underwater demon vocals and more of that signature robotic drum sound that I am really enjoying.  The rest of "Heathens’ Foredoom" is a lot of relatively simple brutal slams made to sound awesome by super creative drummer Lev Kurgansky, who also is the drummer Ezophagothomia, so it comes as no surprise this has superb drumming.
'Estranged From The Womb' is a more straightforward mix of old school death metal riffing and brutal slams.  This track contains the best vocals.  Throughout this album I would say there is too much vocals in the mix, which is a shame because they are very good vocals.  Know when to rest!  It is also worth mentioning that the two vocalists of this group compliment each others style very nicely, just too often.
"Indurate Laceration" is, I believe, my favorite part of ‘Psalms of Wrath’.   It is unwavering brutality and over the top non-sense.

To wrap things up we have the title track, which, after I eventually made it through, fit as a nice way to end this weird album.   Noise layered with haunting noise, then a still haunting guitar part that is soon ran out by more weird noises.
Very pleasant ambient ending reminiscent of what I imagine you may hear while drifting off to sleep on a deserted island’s beach.  In fact, I highly recommend lying down for a nap during the last three minutes of this!

Epicardiectomy - Ulcerous Cadaveric Decrepitation - 2011 Promo

Ulcerous Cadaveric Decrepitation is a two song 2011 promo from Epicardiectomy, a three piece slam band from Czech Republic.

Tracklist:

1: Ulcerous Cadaveric Decrepitation

2: Phallus Decapitation

My opinion and enjoyment of this band have always been very up and down. I think they could be so much better and consistent with their sound. They were on a 3-way split last year with Dormant Carnivore and Kraanium, two bands I also enjoy, and it was a very solid release.

This two song promo, however, seems to be more of the same, with less production quality.  Less production quality is not always a bad thing.  It is in this case though.
Other than a super slow slam around the 2:15 mark of the title track, both of these songs stay at a very steady pace.  A pace that is set and creatively punctuated by the drums, which are what holds this band together.  Nicely fitting pinch harmonics that actually don’t get overwhelming, are heavily peppered throughout this promo.

It is by no means a bad release, and it is only a promotional two songs.  They have done their job by promoting and sparking a desire for me to hear more from the band soon!
Also enjoyable is the artwork of a guy who goes by Rhino, he lives right in the band’s hometown of Prague and does their artwork. He also does work for Gorepot, Gortuary, Kraanium to name a few.

Interview with Andrew Ferris of Analdicktion - 2011

I was lucky enough to have a very quick interview with Andrew Ferris, guitarist and vocalist in Analdicktion.

———————————————————————————————————

Cerebral Reviewment- First of all, thank you for taking the time to answer some questions!
Can you explain a little about your writing process?

Andrew Ferris- Thanks a lot for having us! Well, I write the songs and send the guitar tracks to everyone online. And then see how they go when we try to play them in the studio. If they don’t turn out so well, then we just throw the song away and move on to the next one. We must have written about 26 songs before the album and only chose 14. We’re very fucking picky. There’s at least 2 songs on the album we would have rather of not been on there and never play live haha!

CR-  Your new album, “SLUTS” is really great!  Any future touring plans?  Any U.S. visits coming up?  Can you guys say anything about the ep you are working on?

AF-  Thanks a lot man! As for touring, we will be hitting up Indonesia for 3 days, and then a date in Malaysia a week after.  We will also be playing Bangcock Deathfest in Thailand in December.  As for a U.S. tour, it’s highly unlikely anytime soon because most of us are still trying to stabilize our lives.  I’m currently in school in Thailand and next year Ash will have to join National Service Army (mandatory in Singapore) for 2 years, so it would be difficult to travel so far for too long.  But it is too early to say whether or not we will.  We’ll just see how it goes, but we will definitely be going to the U.S. (and everywhere else) in the future.  I especially would love to play CIM since I was born in Illinois and it was the first Brutal Death Metal/Grind show I ever saw (back in 2006).
The EP we are working on…it’s gonna be a split 7” with Indonesian Grindcore band Proletar.  We’re gonna be doing 4 songs for it.  The songs will showcase more of our Deathgrind/Goregrind side than anything else and we’re straying away from anything that comes off as too misogynistic or generic gore.  It’s more gonna be like an assault on scene bullshit that pisses us off or that we just find plain humorous.  We also recorded a Disrupt song (Human Garbage) for a Disrupt tribute album. It should be out in December from Power It Up Records.

CR-  How did your relationship with Scrotum Jus develop? How about Rotworks? Rotworks truly has some amazing artwork!

AF-  We were about to self-release an E.P. of 5 songs or use them for a split.  I guess word got out that we were looking to release with a label.  Aziz from the label contacted us.  When we met up, he told us we should record a full-length album at a different studio instead.  We agreed and started writing new songs for the album, entered the studio in December 2010 and recorded the album.  He got the album out as a split release with Sevared Records.  We owe a lot to Aziz.  If not for him we wouldn’t have made this much progress in such a short time…we’d be stuck with some self-released 5 song CD-R wondering where to go next hahaha!  We’ve been good friends with him since, he’s a blast to drink and talk shit with! :D
As for Rotworks, Rotworks is Arif from Wormrot, whom we are very close to.  He also did our logo too.  It was a no brainer to get a shirt design from him.  His shit is always sick!

CR-  A lot of different influences can be heard on the new album. Can you give us a few of your favorite bands, of any genre?

AF-  The different influences…that has mostly to do with our indecisiveness of what kind of band we want to be.  The earlier songs we wrote were more Slam orientated and the newer ones more Deathgrind/Goregrind/Powerviolence so everything really got mixed up for the album.

For Brutal Death/Slam: Short Bus Pile Up, Pus Vomit, Down From The Wound, Aversion To Life, Gorevent…for Grind/Powerviolence: Pulmonary Fibrosis, Captain Cleanoff, Circle Of Dead Children, Wormrot, Spazz, Jig-Ai, BruceXCampbell, Jesus Crost, Looking For An Answer, Wormrot, Squash Bowels, Cock and Ball Torture…ah and so much more!  Sludge band Black Sheep Wall had some impact on us like their low-tuning and over-lapping chords with single string notes for extra heaviness. Sonic Youth and various Punk Rock/Noise shit for noise and pick-scratches/feedback!
As for our personal favourite bands, we honestly don’t listen to much stuff related to the genres we are playing.  Personally, I’ve been listening to Tyler, The Creator, Mac Miller, Wu-Tang Clan, The Beatles, Lagwagon, The Wonder Years, Pianos Become The Teeth, Electric Light Orchestra, The Postal Service, and Westbound Train.  I try not to listen to too much stuff that’s related to the music we play, because it will make me think too much of what we should be doing.  Like I can’t just chill and listen to Brutal Death/Grind because I’d be thinking ‘Oh fuck, that part is sick, I need to write something like that’…kinda frustrates me at times haha!

Analdicktion - Sluts - 2011 Scrotum Jus Records

Analdicktion is a four piece Singaporean band with many influences thrown in.

Ash Azman-Vocals

Andrew Ferris-Guitar,Vocals

Irwan Shah-Bass

Aidil Ismail-Drums

Possibly the most creative, brutal, entertaining, all around fun to listen to brutal death/Slam/Grind/Gore/PowerViolence/Whatever album of it's year, 2011.  So many different elements seem to effortlessly flow together for Analdicktion.  Oh and that name!

If I HAD to label them to some sub-genre, I would be tempted just to say Experimental Brutal Death.  Thankfully, everything that anyone ever says is an opinion that has been made up of countless other opinions.  They call call themselves Death Grinding Gore-Violence.  Sounds great to me!  I highly recommend buying this album!  If you are even a slight fan of any of the aforementioned types of music, this album is for you!  Every genre that people are calling this album, or want to call it, is flawlessly performed and unexpectedly flows to the next.

"Fingerbang Abortion" starts with an intro riff reminiscent of Short Bus Pile Up.  Then you hear the disgustingly powerful gutturals lead you into a groovy slamming riff punctuated my creative drum fills.  I particularly love the pinch harmonics around 1:10.  Short song, great album opener.

Then comes “Whoreaphobic”, which immediately slows down to a straightforward slam with everything coming together very nicely.  Fast part around 1:30 is a welcome and creative change leading right into the best part and closing riff of the song.  Vocalist Ash Azman does a beautiful job here of presenting vocals BEHIND the riff and not in front, thus only enhancing it’s clarity and fullness.

"Gagged and Grinded" is a nice mix of thrash and grind with some pretty straightforward shouting vocals.  I love it.  It reminds me that this genre is supposed to be fun and doesn’t always need to sound "brutal".  Actually, if done right like it is here, boundaries can be pushed rather far while still maintaining the same feeling and returning to the original brutality of Analdicktion, or whatever band.

"Phrenetic Impaled Vaginal Dissection" starts by grinding your face off while throwing a very awesome mix of vocals in and a slammy ending.  Another very fun and catchy short tune.
"Quantity of a Human Defilement" starts out with a catchy riff and plays off of it until it slows down to an even catchier, simpler riff thirty seconds in.  Then the track gets peppered with harmonics and sliding, groovy guitar work only to lure you in to it’s sudden end.  This is also the longest track at 3:30, I love that this is full of short songs.  This genre can get boring, but not here.  Proof is evident that this band can grind out fast songs and longer ones, and never sacrifice good writing.

Next up is a cover of the Nirvana song “Anorexorscist” which I do not need to say anything else about.
The song “Semen Covered Butchered Whores” is rightly named and is over before you are done wrapping your brain around the words semen covered butchered whores.  It is relentlessly awesome and has some hardcore elements to it that leave the listener wanting more.

Currently my favorite track has to be “Too Kvlt To Fvck”.   Atmospheric climbing harmonic riffing leading up to….black metal?  Am I fvcking with you?  No, and just wait for the ending.
"Teenage Assault Bukkake Ceremony".  Super low goregrind vocals that I didn’t like as much at first but they don’t get boring and they grew on me.  Simple, short song.

"Campaign For Emo Destruction" is 38 seconds of exciting grindcore thrash with gutturals and gang vocals and a great sample at the end.  Ready or not, you are propelled directly into "Severed Scene Slut", a brutal, comfortable return to their specific brand of slamming brutal death, ending with their slowest slam yet.  Could have done without the sample at the end here.  I am over it though, great song.
"Genetically Abused Youth" keeps a steady pace and plays around one main riff until the 1:10 mark where it holds it’s pace but alters into a super groovy riff that I love!  Perfect way to end this album starting at 2:20.  Everything slows down to an energetic slam and then speeds back up, sending this album out with a bang.

To summarize, "SLUTS" is a must have album for you fans of extreme, brutal, grinding death and more importantly, unforgettably creative music.  Each member that makes up Analdicktion has mastered their craft.

"SLUTS" was released on the now defunct Scrotum Jus Records.  They are now signed to Solvent Abuse Records

Interview with Josh Welshnam of Autonomy - 2011

I was very lucky to have Josh Welshnam, the man behind Rhode Island Brutal Death Metal project, Autonomy, sit down and answer a few questions.

Enjoy:

Cerebral Reviewment-  How old are you?

Josh Welshnam-  I’m 19 years old.

CR-  Why the name Autonomy?

J-  I chose the name Autonomy because it ties in with the idea of a one man band. Autonomy means independence and self-governing, which is how Autonomy is run, completely by me.

CR-  What first got you into this kind of music, have you always been into it?

J-  In my late High School years, I first started getting into slam bands like Devourment and Abominable Putridity.  I have been a huge metal fan basically since elementary school, and since then it has been my life.

CR-  I understand you go to school, how’s that going?

J-  Its going well man, studying Audio Production/Music Industry.  I definitely want a career in music, particularly in the metal industry.

CR-  You have said before that vocals are your passion in Autonomy, has this always been the case?

J-  Definitely. Prior to Autonomy I was the vocalist for an RI based deathcore band called “Death Haven” for about 5 years. Had a lot of good times in that band and it definitely fueled my passion for vocals.

CR-  You are not only an amazing vocalist, but your guitar/songwriting skills really stand out!  How long have you been playing?

J-  Haha I wouldn’t go that far, but I’ve been playing guitar since middle school, so approximately 6-7 years.  I’ve only been writing my own music since Autonomy came into existence.

CR-  Can you tell me about your relationship with Ossuary Industries and how it came about?

J-  I remember talking to BBB about Autonomy and sending him a demo with various tracks spanning from the debut EP “Dimensions of Mephitic Decay” to my more recent material.  He really dug it all and offered me a place in the Ossuary Industries family.  I couldn’t be happier to be a part of the label, and Brian has definitely welcomed me in and has put many great opportunities on the table for me already.

CR-  How is the search for band members going?

J-  Terrible man haha.  Rhode Island is a baron wasteland as far as Brutal Death Metal goes.  I expect things to pick up soon though once some things fall into place for future plans.

CR-  How much time would you guess that you practice, whether it be vocals, guitar, programming, in a week?

J-  As of now I’m spending almost all of my free time writing for an upcoming split with Embalmer, Forged In Gore, and Extremely Rotten that will be released later in the Fall I believe.  So I’d say approximately anywhere between 6 and 10 hours a week depending on my schedule.

CR-  Can you tell me about what equipment you use?

J-  Since the start I’ve been using a Line 6 GX for all of my guitar tracking and Acoustica Beatcraft for all of my drum programming. Autonomy hasn’t had a live appearance yet, so no real live gear to speak of.

CR-  What are your lyrics usually about? What inspires you when writing them?

J-  My lyrics vary from song to song, but are mostly influenced by the human race and religion and how both suck haha.

“Post-Incubation Period”

Feasting on the limbs of the deceased body
Masticating on the fibers of the vital organs
I’ll devour the child inside the abdomen
Repugnant and decrepit
The mutilated remains lie in wait of further consumption
Vile surgery, invoke the darkest perversions of man
Incisions of wretched putrescence
Defiled in mind and body
Extirpation and ingestion of the viscera
Womb eviscerated
Blood congealing as the cavity is emptied
Incisions of wretched putrescence

CR-  Can you tell us any future Autonomy plans?

J-  I’m making the transition to making Autonomy a fully functioning band as most people already know.  Definitely want to hit the stage in the New England area by next Summer, and even expand to other parts of the U.S.  I also have a full length album set for release in August 2012 through Ossuary Industries that I will start writing for later this year.  Just planning to take a short break for a month after the split CD to give my gears a rest and let the split and other releases spread around, and just do some promotion.

CR-  Thanks a lot man, good luck with everything!

J-  Thanks for the interview man keep it sick! \m/

Autonomy - Demo 2011

I was very pleased with Autonomy’s first release, “Dimensions of Mephitic Decay” (REVIEW) so I have been patiently waiting for anything new from Autonomy.  Well, here it is, a two-song demo.  I love it.
The first track on here, “Atrophic Indulgences”, contains everything I loved about DoMD but with faster, tighter riffs.  Still very catchy though.  Reminds me of older Decrepit Birth but with better vocals.   The drum programming shines through here to me as being creative and actually thought out.  Taking a simple, otherwise boring riff around 1:50, and complimenting it with a steady groove that effortlessly carries us through to the next section.  The vocals, to no surprise, are right on.  A step up from DoMD as far as the vocals themselves and mixed very well, the icing on the cake.
"Renounced Posterity" is a good reference as to why I say the songwriting continuously coming from Josh Welshnam is memorable, brutal, and altogether good.
In this super over saturated genre, and even one man bands, which have become extremely common, it becomes harder and harder to stand out.  Unless, of course, you write, record, mix, master, promote, sell, package, ship, and whatever else it takes, all while being humble and positive.  Not to mention finding time to support and promote other bands.  Although, everything stated above would most likely go unnoticed if you made shitty music.  So props to Josh Welshman for grabbing his passion by the balls!  It is also notable that he is not even old enough to drink a beer.

Autonomy - Dimensions of Mephitic Decay - 2011 Sevared Records

I have not always been a fan of one man death metal bands, but this one is really good.  This is Autonomy’s first release, and it is a solid one.  It is not perfect, but it gives a glimpse of what is to come and it assures the listener that they are in good hands.  Josh Welshnam knows what he is doing.

Autonomy’s biography states that it was originally formed as a side project to practice using pro audio equipment.  Well all that practice is paying off!  This has some amazing production, decently programmed drums, and nicely recorded vocals.  Speaking of the vocals, they are very good!  You can really tell that Josh is very passionate about them and has spent tons of time practicing them.  His impressive range of low gutturals and different sounds and styles can be easily heard throughout, especially on the track "Emaciated".

My only complaint would be the drums.  When dealing with a drum machine, it takes a lot more effort and patience than one may think, especially in this genre, to keep it from going stale.  That being said, the drums here are on the verge.  This is 5 songs long and it wasn’t until near the end that the drums stood out.
Although there is always room for improvement in any band, this is exactly the kind of a debut I love hearing.  The kind that gets me excited for more and seems to foreshadow and promise a better, more precise release.  Doing so all while being a very solid and good debut for this one man Rhode Island project.  Since the release of this EP, Autonomy has released a two song demo.  The band is now signed to Ossuary Industries and a full length is in the works.

Lack Of Truth - Under The Torn Flesh - 2013 Death Metal Industry

Lack Of Truth is a Brutal Death Metal band from Saint-Petersburg, Russia, pumping out straightforward BDM with an old school style that is infectious and addictive. Under The Torn Flesh is their first full length, following a 2010 demo release entitled Graveyard of Fools. Graveyard of Fools contains three songs that also appear here on the full length, so this is a fine place to start. It is about 30 minutes of original, creative Brutal Death Metal that most brings to mind Disgorge making slow, passionate love to Defeated Sanity.  Before even hearing this, I was excited by the cover art. It just has that original old school feel. The art is done by Regurgitated Arts, operating out of Murmansk, Russia.

I have listened to this album many, many times and every time it seems to shine in different ways. I really like how it is recorded and mixed, particularly the bass. Valentin Khramtsov does an amazing job filling out the low end here with a super thick, shaky bass tone that can be perfectly heard without being overbearing. Guitarist Sergey Minaev shows his diverse riffing abilities with flawless transitions from fast, all over the neck riffs to slower, chugging, slams with pinch harmonics. The drums get a little tiring and at a couple specific times feel like they are struggling to keep up. Alexey Grigoriev is the man behind the set, and he can definitely drum. He has some creative fills and shows some subtle intricate blast and double bass work, not to mention that snare tone. Vocally, Under The Torn Flesh is a display of all natural, deep gutturals mixed with mid range squeals and a few chorus-esque parts where you can absolutely make out what is being said. What really stands out though are the vocal patterns. Vocalist Alexey Remizov is obviously passionate about what he is doing here. It is always nice to hear original and creative vocals and vocal patterns in a genre where that sort of thing is so overlooked. Everything's really tight and I like the raw production, specifically the raw drum sound.

Only complaint is the quickly fading endings to each song. For an album with such well written songs, it's a shame to break the flow of the whole thing with such a small mistake. The mistake is exactly that though, small. Definitely pick this up. It is really well put together with good song writing that will keep any BDM fan entertained. Any doubts I had about certain parts of the album upon first listens were shortly thereafter falsified.   After a few listens, every thing just falls into place and becomes very catchy. Brutal Death Metal needs more bands like this that are original and work hard in the riff department without just slamming your face off all the time. That's another story for another time, if you want only slams, it's out there in disgusting abundance. This is rare, innovate Brutal Death that will remind you of why you fell in love with it in the first place.

Derogation- Revival Of A Nest Ignorant - 2013 Permeated Records

Art by Regurgitated Arts

On September 30th, 2013, Derogation's "Revival Of A Nest Ignorant" will be unleashed upon the world.  For a release this short, it is really full of awesome and memorable parts.  I am a huge fan already.

Kiev, Ukraine's Derogation come at you with a riffing style similar to Defeated Sanity and a technical prowess that begs many listens; super technical sweeping and tapping parts that teeter on the edge of too much.  It's just really just good writing though.
Some of the all over the place riffs, the beginning of "Abhorrent Fornication" for example, takes me back to the old days when Decrepit Birth were still awesome and original.

Ex Defeated Sanity vocalist Jens Cannibaloki Staschel has found a wonderful new home in Derogation.  His familiar vocals do a really nice job of keeping things creative and disgusting.  The god behind the guitar is Vlad Melnik (Neurogenic, Back Door To Asylum), perfectly partnered up with bassist Alexander Chub (Hedonistic Exility).  The bass tone is wonderfully warm throughout and this guy can really play.  Lev Kurgansky (Ezophagothomia) hold things down behind the drums with blasts and tight fills that ensure to keep your attention.

You get 5 tracks in total.  The last song is a cover and the second to last is just atmospheric noise.  When all is said and done you end up with around 10 minutes of original material from Derogation, but it's the most technically proficient brutal death metal I've heard in a very long time.
My only complaint is the length of this album.  We can only hope there is much more of this on the way, and soon!
For fans of Defeated Sanity, Decrepit Birth, or Disgorge

Created From Pig's Mutilation- Inception of Abhorrent Creation - 2011 Demo

I first learned about this band from this video of them in their rehearsal room.  I was immediately impressed by the feeling and writing of the track.  Also, it looks like they have a really great rehearsal room!  I was left wanting more and thinking to myself, “how does one pronounce CxFxPxMx?”

After some research into the matter I discovered the band’s full name,

COPROEXHUMOCOATHGASM
FISTOLECTONYCHOMICOSIS
PARACOCCIGASTROVOMIT
MUCOSPERMOSUBUNGUAL.

I was left thinking to myself “what the fuck?”

Since, they have changed their name to Created From Pigs Mutilation and they have put out a demo titled “Inception of Abhorrent Creation

Overall, this demo feels like a rather well thought out and executed first take of a young bands attempt of an album.  Instead of pumping out a demo that feels like pieces to a few different puzzles, Inception Of Abhorrent Creation feels like the whole puzzle.  While it may still be missing a few corner pieces, it is proof that there are great things to come from this Italian three piece of self proclaimed ‘diseaseful slamming brutality’.

The first track, “Starting To Devour Human Entrails” starts with an intro of what sounds like the slaughter of pigs.  This intro was created by IntroMania, a production company that creates intros and soundtracks for bands or movies.  Then we have a pretty basic brutal death guitar, drum, vocal part that leads into a build-up that seems to promise a much harder hitting slam than it delivers.  This is fitting though, it feels like a warm up to the oncoming insanity.  This track really explores a lot of territory with tempo changes but not overwhelmingly so.  I really like when a band can do a lot with simplicity.  The drums for example, are simple in the most complex, precise meaning of the word.  It has become so easy and common to bypass the human drummer.  This of course has it’s pros and cons but that is a different discussion entirely.  Nonetheless, Alessandro Garofalo, CxFxPxMx guitarist and drum programmer, is a master at staying simple, tasteful, consistent, and just really good.  All of the above actually cancels out the word simple, but it was a necessary adjective in this case.  I really like the vocals also, at times reminding me of Martin from Kraanium.

Purulent Sodomy Of Putrid Streetwalker’s Flesh” is definitely the best song name I’ve heard in awhile.  The song is very good as well and sort of reminds me of the Italian scene all together, with it’s great vocals and bass parts.   It is catchy, fun and relentlessly blasts forward with thick and slimy guitar riffs and a groovy bass line that sets you up for a sort of marching section where everything blends beautifully.  This song is complete with simple parts, complex parts in every instrument, and variety in vocals.

Italy seems to be a simmering crock pot full of brutal death/slam bands, be it one man or not, human drummer or not, they are almost always decent and seem to consistently pump out new music.  They also, like any region with a growing scene, have similarities.  This could be largely due to Mario Di Giambattista and his million or so projects.  Alessandro Garofalo also has more bands than one hand can count.  I am happy to see people being this active in their scene and showing such blunt passion for the music!

Sometimes it can be very difficult to include a track less than 30 seconds long on your demo when you are not a grindcore outfit.  Well they’ve done it here with “Precocious Dismemberment”, 14 seconds, actually, and it is still creative and has a lot within!  Then “Human Stew” comes charging at you with a brutal assault of guitar and bass slams.  The band again uses a simple concept often forgot about, dynamics.  The guitar gets more technical here but everything still blends into one huge groove!

Fucked, Suffocated and Mutilated” starts off with a short sample of a woman who is probably being fucked, suffocated and then mutilated.  Then this song goes a few different places, all places we’ve been before but are happy to revisit one last time.  The bass is again really awesome throughout this closing track.  Especially when it has it’s jazzy solo right before our epic outro, where the vocalist pretty much goes crazy.  Everything fades out enough for us to hear more mutilation and moaning in displeasure.  Then I moan in pleasure at this demo and patiently await a full length release, out later this year on Ghastly Music.

Pathology- Awaken To The Suffering - 2011 Victory Records

Considering the constant evolving state of electronics and what some would call increasing success of modern day audio engineering, it has become rare to hear bands come out with raw, unique sounding records that are packed with feeling and the flaws are audible and appreciated.  It is far more common to have a band go into a studio and have the engineer clean everything up and make them sound like the perfect musicians they are not.  Here, however, Pathology manage to get a clean, crisp sound while still having their passion and talent shine through.  The best of both worlds?  Maybe.

The first track on this album, "Dissected by Righteousness" wastes no time at all.  It immediately goes right into a very groovy, brutal, blasting riff.  Next we are lead to the first of this album’s brutally catchy slams in which we find proof of Jonathan Huber’s super-human, or super-something, guttural abilities.  Don’t worry, don’t rewind, these are showcased throughout Awaken To The Suffering’s entirety.
A creative but repetitive riff with a harmonic struck over and over again seems to go on forever and then stop briefly and return.  Then my favorite part of this song, a super awesome and surprising melodic riff is repeated, creating an amazingly haunting atmosphere, ending just in time for a perfectly placed and beautifully played guitar solo.

Now, if you are following along with the correct album and song, the last twenty seconds of this song, you know, the part right after you thought it was ending, will blow your mind, and crush your skull.  All while perfectly wrapping things up.

"Ingestion of Creation" plays back and forth with brutal ‘marching’ riffs.  Reminds me a lot of Visceral Disgorge.  Hopefully though it will remind the Slam/Brutal Death community that it is possible, and very rewarding, to insert insanely creative guitar parts to this genre.   Very refreshing.
At about one minute in, the reality of intense and fun songwriting is slammed back into the listener.  Everything about this is made much more disgusting and fun by the vocals.

"Hostility Towards Conformity" starts with more of what I am really loving about this record, huge, melodic riffs that create so much atmosphere and feeling.  Only a few key notes are changed to switch this up to something that sounds so different but really is not before it all returns to that main atmospheric riff that this track is built around.  Time signatures are played with and all instruments are very nicely balanced and blended together.  This is also one of the few instances in life that a fade out seems fitting.
"Media Consumption" is a short straightforward track where the drums keeps things pounding forward and the vocals get creative and crazy.   Then we have guitar solo number two which is, yet again, great.  Following that is this "breakdown" that has everyone up in arms.  It is really not that hard to enjoy, and if you are one of many people saying how much it sucks, I bet you are bobbing your head to it at the same time.  Loosen up and enjoy yourself.
"Society’s Desolation" starts with precise hammer-on pull-off guitar work and a stop and go pounding feel that begs to be resolved.  I wouldn’t really say that it ever is resolved, it just flows so nicely into the next blasting sections that you forget about it.  Due to the truly amazing song writing though, it will be back.

Obie Flett graces this track with his literally monster-sounding gutturals and it is nice that you can actually tell when it is him.  The most impressive part though, vocally, is Huber’s incredible lung capacity displayed at the end of this track.
Following a short, simple instrumental track is “A Perverse Existence” which has my favorite intro thus far.   Fast, blasting buildup with Dave Astor once again showing his creative excellence on the drums.  More time changes will have your head spinning before a slower slam ended by Huber’s reoccurring mid-range “bla”, which I absolutely love.  There is also a really cool sliding riff to end this track.

"Humanity’s Cesspool" Will force you to bob your head along with its chuggy, groovy parts.   Some far-in-the-distance yells are heard and this track starts having a weird, dark, almost black metal feel.   It’s awesome.  Another guitar solo and we are off and running with more melodic, full of emotion riffing, only to end with slammier versions of the same riffs.  This track does an awesome job of repeating all the right things in all the right ways.
"Festering in Filth" starts very fast and does not slow down until A.J. Magana says so.  Possibly my favorite part of this album starts at 1:15 and changes the whole mood of the track.
Then a solo that makes you feel like you are riding a horse brings in “Opposing Globalization”.  This intro seems very out of place until, of course, it’s return at the end of the song.

Pathology rerecorded the song “Emesis”, previously on their 2009 album “Age of Onset”.  This is proof that this band makes great songwriting sound easy.  Amazing, flowing transitions from every instrument.

"Awaken To The Suffering" ends beautifully with"Revocation of Earth", a soft, pretty display of Kevin Schwartz’s guitar mastery.  As if the solos were not enough.  Kevin Schwartz and Tim Tiszczenko both do an amazing job on this whole album.  Oscar Ramirez also puts out his share of brutal riffs and Dave Astor is his usual amazing self.  Jonathan Huber has impressive range, several different vocal styles and can hold a note/gurgle/burp longer than most.

Gencuy Brutal Art Interview

Gencuy Brutal Art creates art for brutal death metal and black metal bands and does a very good job at it.  He operates out of Indonesia, a place with a constantly expanding and somewhat controversial brutal death metal scene.  I was happy to find out that there is also an incredibly supportive community for this kind of art in Indonesia.

————————————————————————————————————

Cerebral Reviewment-  Hello and thank you for answering some questions! Could you let everyone know a little about yourself and how long you have been drawing?

Gencuy-  Hello, Gencuy is my nickname, not my real name. I am 21 years old now and living in Bandung, a city in Indonesia, I make the design work for the underground community. Mainly death metal bands and also black metal bands all over the world. I’ve been drawing since childhood. I learned to draw on my own and I never followed a special way or went to art school.

CR-  How long have you been into brutal art? What got you started?

G-  I started BrutalArt a few years ago, around 2007. So to say I have 5 years working on BrutalArt. I really like extreme music, especially DEATHMETAL and BLACKMETAL, but I am not proficient in music. So I wanted to do something, so I can get involved in this music community. BrutalArt makes me a part of the community and music that I love.

CR-  In your opinion, can brutal art ever take things too far by being too gross or obscene?

G-  What I’m expressing in BrutalArt is something unusual for the artist. The other side of life… murder, prostitution, death, deception, and other things that people think should not be talked about. Such things are discussed in the songs of Black Metal Death metal. I also always have a theme I wish to convey in my brutal art.

CR-  I always love when you post pictures of your sketches before they are finished. Can you describe your process a little bit from start to finish? How long do you usually take on a project?

G-  The process I go through to make BrutalArt is; begin by thinking of a theme that will be created, then create a sketch on paper using a pencil, and then proceed to use the inking pen, and after finishing with the image on paper, I input the image into the computer using a scanner, to subsequently be edited and the last process is in the Photoshop program. Time it takes to make a work can be varied according to mood, but I always try to be professional, doing a work within 1 week. If I’m not busy it could be faster, and may take longer if I am busy.

CR-  Do most bands tell you exactly what they want or do they give you a lot of freedom to draw what you want?

G-  Clients and bands are free to give the concept of what they want. I’ll try to make a work like what they want. I usually ask for tracks and lyrics of their songs, it really helps me to understand the character of the band who I am working with.

CR-  What or who are some of your biggest influences?

G-  The Death metal community, and love of music is the most influential for me. Surely the people who always support me and love brutal art!

CR-  Being from Indonesia, you probably do not have a lack of bands wanting to work with you. What is the art scene like there? Is there a lot of other brutal art? What is mainstream art like there?

G-  Yes there is a wonderful art community in my city of Bandung. Its name is Illuminator. There are many talented artists, each with a different style, and I know them. You need to know there is a shortage in my country people and bands who understand the artwork. They can not appreciate a work, and there is still a lot of piracy with the artwork here.

The Illuminator is an underground community that organizes events and exhibitions for artists.

CR-  Who are your favorite artists?

G-  Some of my favorite artists are Mark Riddick, Mike Majewski, Daniel Corcuera, Matt daughter, Christophe Moyen, Bin Bautista, Jeff Zornow, Nat Jones and my friends Derby, Candra (monmonart). I really like the artwork in black and white style, and they do it very well. That’s the reason I idolize them.

CR-  Do you have a favorite piece you’ve done?

G-  I love all my works. But, I’ve made a work that I love very much, and I will not sell it … I gave it the title “GOD BETRAYER”

CR-  Anything thing else you’d like to say to fans or aspiring artists?

G-  Do something that you like, because that would be something you are proud of yourself for doing.

Keep it Brutal \ m /

CR-  Thanks a lot!

Visceral - Macabra Realidad De Caos Y Letargo - 2010 Charred Remains Records

Visceral are an amazing three piece churning out brutal death metal in Chile.  Charred Remains Records, out of Chile, has been putting out a lot of really good brutal death and grind for a while now.  I have not heard any of Visceral’s material before “Macabra Realidad De Caos Y Letargo”.

This is a very solid album, and I listened to it before I knew this was a three piece.  Wow, it’s refreshing to hear a great guitarist be a great vocalist also.  His vocals are all over the place, in a great way.  They mix in well with the different aspects of this record.  There are very technical parts, very slow slams, and everything in between.   The drummer is nuts too!   At times the drums almost have a slower, jazzy feel that I love.   They have a tone that reminds me of Cephalotripsy's drums.
With only three guys here, there is an amazing amount of interesting things going on all at once.  Not to worry, they can all be picked out and easily enjoyed.  The whole album has a raw, unpolished feel; something that more american brutal death metal bands should realize and utilize.

The fast moving riffs go along with the drums perfectly, and the bassist is right under everything, steadily filling out the sound with a precise attention to detail.

This is a great record and a great band!

Discreate - Contingent Development of Inanimate Modifications - 2011 Demo - Viceral Vomit Records

This demo is a very strong one from another Filipino group, Discreate.  Let's dive right in.

Thought Form Perverted” starts by blasting your face off and then Michael Carlos (guitar) and Em Larzano (drums) spend the rest of the song proving they can write creatively and have played together for a while.  At first I didn’t think I would like this track.  It seemed so far from what I was expecting.  Experimental.  I actually like this a lot!   The guitar tone is raw, nothing is over produced, and this track serves as a nice foreshadowing promise to great songwriting.   I can’t wait to see how the vocalist will fit in with this band but I am pleased to hear an entire instrumental track.

————————————————————————————————————-

EDIT: I wrote the above portion of this review before receiving the actual demo, on which ‘Thought Form Perverted’ had been re-named ‘Thoughtforms’ and did in fact contain vocals.  It is also a live version on the demo.   If I had never listened to the first, instrumental version, I probably wouldn’t like this song at all.   I am glad I did though because now I know that once this track is actually tracked and rerecorded, or possibly recorded live better, it will be great.  I think that Miko did a great job with the vocals on the demo track, I only wish everything could be heard and parts determined.   All that being said, it is still better than most demo tracks from bands trying to be technical on their first demo.

Multiple Stabwounds” has good vocals and drumming over strange guitar riffs.   I am loving the creative flow between all three instruments here.   Yes, the guttural voice is an instrument; one that is not very often utilized to it’s fullest potential.   Miko Pareja, however, sounds well on his way.   For a 3 piece and no bass, this sounds huge!   The guitar solo is literally all over the place on this track but always starts and ends in a good spot.   Guitar and drums move together and are very tight. There is a main ‘chorus’ riff that is returned to a few times and it kind of holds everything else together.   All three members prove in this single song that they are all very talented at what they do.   If I were going to be picky, which I have to be, I would say that this song needed more structure.   It does, however, contain the kind of songwriting you would expect on a bands first demo.  I really hope that Discreate stays a three piece.   They are managing to get a unique sound and their songwriting is already quite creative and distinct.   If anything, they overdid some things here.   The solos on "Multiple Stabwounds" got to be a little much and at certain points throughout the demo things just felt a little rushed.  Their riffs are weird and creative enough to stand alone without too many technical fills.

"The Pleasure of Eternal Killing" starts with a sort of bouncy, simple riff that made me smile.  Awesome drums here as well.  Then I was thrown right into a hectic spiral full of quick riffs and deep gutturals steadily marching forth until the song slows down to an almost totally unstructured break (in a good way) and then builds back up again.  I am having some trouble describing this sound.  There are a lot of interesting/awesome tones and sounds coming from these three dudes, so buy this demo and listen closely!

Very happy to read this quote from the band: "we are amateur musicians with complicated passion for continuous learning

Discreate pushes the boundaries of brutal death metal and obviously plan on continuing to do just that. I am very excited for more from this band!

Discreate is currently working on a full-length debut for 2013.

Digging Your Tomb - Demo(lition) - 2011 Demo

This Spanish three peice manages to get an impressivly diverse array of sounds into these four songs, one of which being an ‘outro’ with a spanish speaking man saying something over a slow hip hop beat. Incredibly unfitting, unless you enjoy it, then I guess it would fit in with your enjoyment of the three tracks before it.
Super groovy, super heavy, overall fuzzy production but blends together nicely. Creative drum programming makes for a fun, constantly changing tempo complimented by gutturals and squeals and some other weird but awesome vocals.  This is angry, aggressive, out of the ordinary, non stop slam.
