Ungraceful Interview 2024

Ungraceful is beefy, chunky, groovy riff filled 4th dimensional slam, with untouchably nasty vocals.  A 27 minute journey in a brutal dimension that is rather infectious and addictive.  This two-man group was nice enough to sit down and answer a few questions.  Enjoy!!

Thank you for taking the time to answer some questions!  Who do we have the pleasure of speaking with?

Ungraceful is a two-man project.  Jake writing and playing all instruments, Azeratรฉ on the disgusting vocals.  Am I getting that right?  Any other members included in the process?

Jake: “This is Jake and I’ve sent all your questions to Azerate and will include his answers too. And yes, we’re a 2-man show. “

Speaking of process, what is the Ungraceful writing and recording process like?

Jake: “Typically, I start by setting a tempo and developing a solid riff. Once that’s recorded, I let go mentally, allowing the tempo to drive the process as I continue jamming and see where things naturally evolve. Much of the writing involves thinking, ‘What would sound best next? How do I get there?’- always trying to stay a few steps ahead.

The transitions between riffs are often more important than the riffs themselves, as I focus on hooks, building momentum and creating climactic moments. Slam is a straightforward genre, which makes it challenging to keep things interesting. Some songs have taken weeks to complete, while others come together in a single day. For example, when I wrote Schizophrenic Machete Assault, I set the tempo at 120 bpm, hit record, and the song’s structure was done in one take. Once you add drums, the creativity really starts to flow, and you often discover ways the guitar can be improved, leading to back-and-forth adjustments. It’s a long, evolving process.”

Azerate:  Unfortunately, we live a distance from each other.  As of now, Jake writes drums, then tracks guitar and bass, exports a demo and forwards it to me. I take time to listen and create a solid mental image before creating any phasing. In some instances I get into a trance state and usually will power through a note of words or phases in one take. As the technicality of the music progresses, with Jakes encouragement, I begin to experiment with laying techniques and variations of vocal styles.

Artificial Aberrations is such a crazy album, already mentioned on online forums and youtube comments as easily one of the best of last year.  Were those songs a long time in the making?  How do you guys feel like it was received?

Jake:  I believe I started writing the first song for that album about a month after the release of "There Is No God Here."

It wasn’t until about a year and a half later that the full album came out, so it took quite a while. Originally, it was supposed to be another 7-song EP, like the first release. But after connecting with Azerate, we decided to write two brand-new tracks just for fun, unrelated to the EP. Those songs eventually became our 2022 single.

Alex from Inherited Suffering Records reached out after hearing the singles and wanted to plan our next release.

He suggested we combine the singles with the tracks we had planned for the EP and turn it into a full album. This meant we had to re-record the EP tracks to match the tuning and mix of the singles, and that’s how the album officially came to life.

Telekinetic DNA Removal was actually written about a week before the album’s release, and we included it to round the project out to nine songs. I knew we had something special but it was definitely still received better than I thought.

Azerate: The album was finished for sometime but revisited after we signed with Inherited Suffering.  In preparation of the release, the entire album was re-recorded and sounded vastly different from its predecessor. The successor is what you all know to be “Artificial Aberrations”. Revisiting them allowed for us to refine our writing and sounds, while pushing the boundaries of our ability. I (azerate), personally feel it was underestimated; which allowed for a greater impact than either of us expected.

I am continually grateful for Inherited Suffering for seeing the diamonds in the rough, and helping build awareness to the general masses. I can say this is one of the most unique projects I have had the pleasure of participating in. Jake is a masterful musician with unmatched skill and creativity.

How did working with Reality Fade come about, and what can you tell us about your upcoming 2nd full-length?  What are your fans in for?

Jake:   Again, we were lucky enough to have them reach out to us. As Azerate would tell me, it was a manifestation. I was talking for some time about wanting to possibly get in with Realityfade due to their community engagement and continued support of their bands also their drip is always sick as fuck.

As for the next album, I would say there’s a bigger focus on riffs and technicality. I wanted to take all of the great aspects of Artificial Aberrations and turn it up to 11. All of our work so far has been written with the idea in mind that a good drummer could play it. I’ve basically thrown that idea out and now we’re just going full on demon mode. As of me writing this, I’d say we’re about 50% done with the album.

Azerate:  After convening at the Bronx Zoo in New York city, we went to New Jersey and had our first live practice.  During this time, we had just received merch from Russia and began sharing posts about the releases online.  It was at this time we were contacted directly by Reality Fade

The new music is an evolution of the alien sonic captured in our music.  I believe it to be more visceral, suspenseful and off putting.  As we develop as artists and as people; our preferences and taste change too. While I feel that Artificial Aberrations had a more rigid concept in place, this 2nd album is more advanced yet naturally took form.  It’s primal, cold and calculated.  I believe Jake and I’s characters are expressed much more clearly this time around.

Artificial Aberrations was the sound of us getting a foot in the door, and this next album is us comfortably taking the couch.

How did the name Ungraceful come about?

Jake: Ungraceful started as a social media tag I used for a long time, mainly for my art page on Instagram and a few entrepreneurial ventures that didn’t pan out.

Over time, it evolved into a regular personal Instagram account, but the name stuck. When I began making music, I was brainstorming for a name, and after searching ‘Ungraceful’ on Spotify and not finding any other artists using it, I decided the ungraceful legacy will keep going.

Can you name 3 bands that you take influence from?

Jake: I’ve been blasting a lot of Syphilectomy lately. Deprecation is another favorite—another two-man band, but those Russian morherfuckers know how to write a good slam.

Speaking of, We’ve been compared to Abominable Putridity a few times, which I guess is a compliment. Maybe that’s why Alex reached out. who wouldn’t want to work with the discount version of their favorite brutal death metal bands?”

Azerate:  Traumatomy, Putrescent and Inpoexia

Can you name a few upcoming bands that we should check out?

Jake:  That’s a better question for Azerate cus I’m a mainstream poser.                             Azerate is a living almanac for the deepest, darkest underground caveman shit.  Also he’s in like 39 bands, check them all out.

Azerate: Be on the look out for Surgical Abnormalization, Knife Fight, Sumijigoku, and any project featuring Hugo Ojeda.

What is something about you that fans of your music would be surprised to learn?

Jake:  I’m actually just three raccoons in a trench coat, it’s a miracle that we’ve actually made it this far.

Azerate:  We are just like you. fans of some brutal music who decided to make our own.            To be honest we are both full of surprises, quirks and niches but above all else, Jake doesn’t know he’s black so I constantly call him ni**a to remind him ๐Ÿ˜‚ cause that’s my ni**a”

Thank you both so much again for the interview!!!  Cannot wait for more from you guys!

Scabiasis - Interview and Demo Review 2024

Scabiasis are a 4-piece out of Endicott, New York.  This demo keeps growing on me more and more with each listen.  Old School Death Metal vibes meet raw Slam/Brutal Death.  Think early Cephalotripsy mixed with Suffocation demos, add in a little more groove, and you've got this 7 and a half minute slab of debauchery.

I love how this is recorded, how the writing is not trying to be over the top, and these disgusting vocals.  I really cannot wait for a full length from this band!  Their guitarist, Keegan, answers some questions below:

Q: Thank you for taking the time to answer some questions!  Who from the band do we have the pleasure of speaking with?

A: I’m Keegan, I play guitar!

Q: How did Scabiasis come about?  Can you touch on members other bands, inactive or still going?

A: Scabiasis started as just a side thing with me and the drummer Steve just to keep us playing while waiting for our other band Course of Extinction to start practicing again, we recorded the demo and then got our friend Marc (who plays guitar in Course of Extinction) to record bass and then ask my friend Nick who I’ve been in a few different projects with to record vocals. Demo received some good feedback so we decided to keep it going.

Q: Is this sound far from what you guys have been doing with other projects?  How would you describe your sound?

A: I like to think that it’s different, if anything maybe it’s like a mix between Course of Extinction and anything that Nick and I have done together but I guess it depends on who you ask. I think we have a dirty, raw type sound and we plan to keep it that way.

Q: Can you tell us anything about the hung/meathooked naked woman?  She is just lovely!

A: It’s actually art that was bought in 2019/2020 from an artist that at the time went under the tag earthlygood for a different band that Nick and I have called Human Menu but we never used it

Q: I believe I read that you guys are working on an EP, please say it's true!!!  How much can you tell us about it?

A: An ep was planned but we’re thinking about just going for a full length, we have 4 new songs to record and I think we’re shooting for one or 2 more

Q: Everyone seems pretty tight on their instruments, even these gutturals stand out.  How seriously to you guys take your crafts?  Lots of practice?

A: I mean we try to take it as seriously as possible (musically) but at the same time, we want to have fun. We try to practice at least 2 times a week but shit happens lol I’m glad we sound tight though, always sounds a bit sloppy to me haha

Q: What can we expect from Scabiasis in the near future?

A: Well you can expect an album for sure, we also got a show offer and plan on taking that on. Hope more show offers in the future!!

Q: Can you name 3 bands that you take influence from?

A: For me personally, I’d say Dripping, Internal Bleeding and Cephalotripsy are my biggest influences for this project.

Q: Can you name a few upcoming bands that we should check out?

A: Some upcoming bands that have caught my attention are Virologist for one, some young fucks from cali making some nasty BDM. Another band would be Coprocephalic Mutations, the homies from across the pond also making some nasty ass BDM. And one more band would be Neurodegeneration, just dropped a demo in August and that shit is absolutely disgusting

Thanks again!  Loving the demo, and cant wait for more!!!!!!

Thank you for the time and support yo!! Keep it sick and brutal

.357 Homicide - Immutable Lethality

Another 2-man Slammer, this time out of the UK.  .357 Homicide describe themselves as "Violent Slam".  I must say, this feels accurate to what I hear when I hit play on their most recent release, "Immutable Lethality".  A wonderfully raw sound, untampered with yet still perfectly balanced.  Not-to-mention this snare tone!!!!

I am a new fan of this band, and they are fairly young, having formed in 2020.  Despite only 4 years together, .357 have 1 EP, 2 Demos, and 3 Full Lengths that all seem to be crazy and worth checking out!  There are countless new Slam projects coming out weekly, most of which are hurried-along clout-chasing cacophonies that kill the listener with repetitious boredom.  This is NOT that.  "Immutable Lethality" is as unique and strange as it is classic Slam.  Please do support this band!

Heinous Exsanguination - The Stench Of Decaying Flesh - 2024 - Gorehouse Productions

A 2-man Slamming machine out of Florida and Texas, Heinous Exsanguination are here to make a nasty and memorable first impression.

The band's first EP drops September 6th via Gorehouse Productions.  With 2 singles already released and constantly melting my brain, I am very excited to hear the remaining 5 tracks.  Both "Vile Rotting Mass" and "Severed Limbs, Mangled Remains" are around 3 minute slabs of juicy production meets raw, tempo changing catchiness.  Not-to-mention pretty heavy-hitting feature vocals with Angel Ochoa (Cephalotripsy) and Richard Smihula (Desoectomy).  It's all of this AND this wonderful artwork from Armaada Art that have me greedy for more.

Check out "Vile Rotting Mass" below!

Organectomy - Nail Below Nail - 2022 Unique Leader

Organectomy, a death metal band from New Zealand, are hopefully writing new material.

They currently have two singles that released this year (2024), with very similar and beautiful artwork.  I can only assume this is part of a larger body of work?  Fingers crossed.

While I impatiently wait, I revisit their third album.

2017 brought us Domain Of The Wretched, followed up with 2019's Existential Disconnect, both of which boast beefy and brutal riffs and non-stop catchiness.

Nail Below Nail was released in 2022 on Unique Leader Records.  Production is crispy and instrumentation super-tight.  Coming in at 45 minutes of Slammy, sometimes Techy, sometimes Old School Death Metal esque, Nail Below Nail is impressively creative and as brutal as always.  The songwriting, how it's all put together, and the vocals.  All of it seems to get better with each of Organectomy's albums.

One thing that cannot be denied, with songwriting and infectious grooves like this, you will be bobbing your head before you even realize it.

Organectomy can also serve as a trail-blazing band for those on a high horse when it comes to Slam.  They do a beautiful job of blending truly monstrous Slamming parts into rather Death Metal structures.  You may be enjoying the very stuff you hate on, and then hopefully falling in love with how fun this album is!

I would say any of their albums are worth purchasing, but this one feels like the one that leads the band down the path of brutality that they have mastered.  Please check out Nail Below Nail.

Cardiomyotomy Interview 2024

Cardiomyotomy, also known as Heller's cardiomyotomy, is a surgical procedure that treats achalasia by cutting the muscles of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) to improve the movement of food and liquids through the esophagus into the stomach. Achalasia is a condition in which the LES doesn't relax, preventing food and fluid from passing into the stomach.

Cardiomyotomy is also the name of a one-man, self-proclaimed Brutal/Guttural/Slamdown project out of Jakarta, Indonesia.  Sony Suhendrik was nice enough to sit down and answer a few questions!  Check it out below!!

What is your name?  How old are you?

- My name is Sony Suhendrik, I am 27 years old

How did Cardiomyotomy begin?  What does that name mean?

- This started when I once made a one man goregrind solo project called "CONTOLEKTOMY", then I got several people to be part of the band, then they suggested changing the name, then the band was filled with full members and I decided to change it to "CARDIOMYOTOMY"
- based on what I read, Cardiomyotomy is an operation for achalasia of the cardia, a condition in which the muscle in the lower oesophagus fails to relax and therefore hinders the passage of food and fluid into the stomach.
- and this is a cool name, no one has used it yet, that's why I used that name for my band

Who are some bands that influence you?

- Some of the bands that influenced me in making more for CARDIOMYOTOMY are DEVOURMENT, CEPHALOTRIPSY, ABOMINABLE PUTRIDITY, SOILS OF FATE, EPICARDIECTOMY, CEREBRAL INCUBATION, and many more

Is Cardiomyotomy signed to Gattack Records?  Pathologically Explicit?

- Last year, the CARDIOMYOTOMY EP was released by Mr. Fernando, Pathologically Explicit Recordings, then this year I plan to release 2 new fresh songs via my friend's label, we are in the same city, and it aims to support my friend's label too, and it's called GATTACK RECORDS

GATTACK RECORDS

"Euphoric Of Abnormal Horde" is so groovy.  Is this all written by you and then the members of the band learn the parts?  Can you explain your process a little bit?

- Yes, that's right, I write all the music, then my friends follow the songs I wrote, that's how my band works

Indonesia has been known for years to have some of the sickest Brutal Death Metal bands.  Is Slam having a take-over there currently like it is here in the states?

- I don't think so, here there is a very good balance between Slam Death Metal and Brutal Death Metal, of course I also like a lot of BDM bands

What are a few upcoming Indonesian slam bands we should watch for?

- there are several bands that I think are very good, BLEDOS VECTOMY, my friend's band, they combine SLAM and HIP HOP, then there is TEBAS, I know them, their album was released earlier this year and it's great, Burp's vocals are like CEPHALOTRIPSY, honestly, I really strict in terms of choosing vocals, I prefer bands that use the EXHALE technique because it is more challenging and difficult, I am also a user of the EXHALE technique

Who did the artwork for the album?

- Aziz Blckstry, in my opinion, he is a great album cover artist, I love his work

CHECK OUT MORE HERE

How did you get into this kind of music?  What are some of your other passions?

- At first I only liked heavy metal bands, like Linkin Park, Avenged Sevenfold, Deftones, then Deathcore, but now I don't really like deathcore, then I explored other music and I entered the SLAM, BDM and GORE GRIND scene, I really like it , and snare sound, guttural burp vocals, groovy guitar part, blast beat, I really like it
- I also like other genres such as Shoegaze (Cocteau Twins, Slowdive), Pop/Britpop (The Smiths), Slow/Prog Rock (Dream Theater, Yngwie Malmsteen, Crimson Glory), Thrash Metal (Slayer, Megadeth), Death Metal (Cannibal Corpse, Dying Fetus, Deicide, Massacre, 200 Stab Wounds, Blood Incantation, Necrot) and many more

Is more music coming?  Any tours coming soon?

- yes, I plan to make material that leads to old school SLAM such as Devourment, New Wave Old School Slam
- I don't have any tour plans yet, just playing domestically, because I'm still adjusting, I now have to take on guitar and vocals because I don't have full members anymore, so it's possible that my next musical material will be adjusted to make it easier to play guitar and vocals, this band has been officially running as a One Man Band for now

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer these questions!

- You're Welcome! Salute!

Anything you'd like to say to your fans?

- I love & respect all of you music listeners, especially SLAM, BDM, and Death Metal, I will always accept your criticism and suggestions, long live DEATH METAL, I hope you are always healthy and united to fellow metalheads! \m/ , Thank you!

Parasitic Septicity are a new band out of Texas.  I think this first track from the band is some of the best BDM in a long time.  The track, "Mutations of A Putrid Breed" is one half of their 2-song promo "Genesis Of The Infestation" to be released on July 19th.

With amazing artwork done by Rudi of GorgingSuicide who has done so many amazing things!

Lyrics:
Entering flesh, an unknown entity
Burrows deep to infest, it spreads
Innards become a feast, a monster within
Nourishing itself for expansion

Circulation fails, as immune cells succumb
Squirming, writhing, a grotesque tableau is done
Invisible demons devouring, living nightmares mesh.
Their hosts become victims, helpless and fresh

Rapidly, the vile infestation reproduces
Human immunity battling relentlessly
Organs are its playground, leeches for blood
Mutations of horrid organisms, a putrid breed

Agonizing screams of prolonged devourment
Pain, horror, immutable to foresee
The body is a vessel, host for the hideous
An inner spectacle for its species to compile

Scalpels slice out pulsating nodes
A surgical intervention to repel the monstrosity
The parasitic creature within, fights and resists
A grotesque battle, as the human body persists

As darkness consumes and pain subsides
Succumbing to horror, a monster still hides
Inside the corpse, a body now torn apart
A tragic ending, parasitic work of art

Blast From The Past - Abnormality - 2010 - Mallika Sundaramurthy - Nidorous

I wrote this 14 years ago:

"Death Metal with good vocals, ones that you would totally say were not a woman.

Yes, that is a woman behind Abnormality's dialed in, precise, impressive guttural voice. This scene has a huge lack of female participants and followers, so I am always very happy to see this.

This release is a huge leap forward from their 2007 Demo. The songs are well put together and actually feel like they have different parts. The only problem I have with it is that there are only three songs on it! So I look forward to much more from Abnormality."

Looking back on it now, I actually enjoy that 2007 demo very much! Possibly in a different way, and I love the direction the band went in, but it showed a lot of promise early on.

Vocalist Mallika has come a long way and has continued to stay active in the scene; heading up numerous bands and running a label (Ultimate Massacre Productions) with husband Serge Gordeev (Epicardiectomy)

Abnormality had a long life, with 3 full-length albums.

Mallika currently does vocal in Unfathomable Ruination, Nidorous, and Emasculator.  Each of which are very worth checking out.  Nidorous was a true gem to stumble upon.  Check out a track below:

Nauseating - Subjected To Rot - 2024 - Vile Tapes Records

This 20 minute slab of skull-bashing slam was just released on Vile Tapes Records, a quickly rising label out of Russia.
"Subjected To Rot" opens with a haunting, cold, hip-hop esque beat/feel.  Then drops right into a mid-paced slam that sets the tone for the rest of the EP; a near perfect tone for whats going on with the instruments and the sheer barbarity that ensues.  Then the vocals begin.  Dear god the vocals.  This release may have the nastiest and lowest inhuman gutturals in a long time, surely out-doing anything yet this year.  To think, I haven't even mentioned the all-star roster of vocalists with features!  You will hear grunts and gurgles from D of PeelingFlesh, Andrew of Cerebral Incubation, and perhaps a newer voice to some of you, Rodger Fischer, also-known-as MC Cumblood, who specializes in Death metal/Gore Rap.  MC Cumblood and MC Bushpig make up Butcher's Harem, a Goregrind/Horrorcore/Rap group from Australia.

If "Subjected To Rot" had zero guest features, it would still have some of slam's most disgusting vocals.  Ivan Tyulkin (Nauseating, Insect Inside) is raising the bar for extreme gutturals recently.
Insect Inside has shared a couple videos of him recording vocals that showed just how low he can go.  This is already a couple of years old.
See a recent video of Ivan recording some vocals for "Subjected To Rot" HERE!

The 2nd track, "Dissect Vaginal Skin" is immediately catchy.  Warm, thick guitar and bass tones meet precise drumming and more insane vocals as the song wraps-up with one my favorite, Andrew from Cerebral Incubation.
Intestinal Disemboweling contains the tastiest slams yet, then grinds to an amazing halt, just to rebuild on itself and bash your brains in.  Then of course Damonteal of Peeling Flesh shows up to help on Incubation of Dismembered Bodies, with a crazy heavy section of skull slamming, pinch harmonics, groovy drums, etc.
The title track, "Subjected To Rot" is where MC Cumblood makes his grand entrance.  With the undeniable heaviness that precedes this track, his gore-growly rap style seems to fit.  It's new to me, and I am not AGAINST mixing rap into slam, as the similarities are there, but its the death growl approach to it that may grow old.  At any rate, it works here and isn't overdone.
The EP takes you on a ride, but it's really the perfect length.  Just when it starts to veer off, "Deformed Fragments" brings it all together for a nice, in-your-face, slam package of under 20 minutes.

This is really a must have release and you should purchase it on CD, Cassette Tape, Shirts, Patches, ETC...  HERE
