Cardiomyotomy Interview 2024

Cardiomyotomy, also known as Heller's cardiomyotomy, is a surgical procedure that treats achalasia by cutting the muscles of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) to improve the movement of food and liquids through the esophagus into the stomach. Achalasia is a condition in which the LES doesn't relax, preventing food and fluid from passing into the stomach.

Cardiomyotomy is also the name of a one-man, self-proclaimed Brutal/Guttural/Slamdown project out of Jakarta, Indonesia.  Sony Suhendrik was nice enough to sit down and answer a few questions!  Check it out below!!

What is your name?  How old are you?

- My name is Sony Suhendrik, I am 27 years old

How did Cardiomyotomy begin?  What does that name mean?

- This started when I once made a one man goregrind solo project called "CONTOLEKTOMY", then I got several people to be part of the band, then they suggested changing the name, then the band was filled with full members and I decided to change it to "CARDIOMYOTOMY"
- based on what I read, Cardiomyotomy is an operation for achalasia of the cardia, a condition in which the muscle in the lower oesophagus fails to relax and therefore hinders the passage of food and fluid into the stomach.
- and this is a cool name, no one has used it yet, that's why I used that name for my band

Who are some bands that influence you?

- Some of the bands that influenced me in making more for CARDIOMYOTOMY are DEVOURMENT, CEPHALOTRIPSY, ABOMINABLE PUTRIDITY, SOILS OF FATE, EPICARDIECTOMY, CEREBRAL INCUBATION, and many more

Is Cardiomyotomy signed to Gattack Records?  Pathologically Explicit?

- Last year, the CARDIOMYOTOMY EP was released by Mr. Fernando, Pathologically Explicit Recordings, then this year I plan to release 2 new fresh songs via my friend's label, we are in the same city, and it aims to support my friend's label too, and it's called GATTACK RECORDS

GATTACK RECORDS

"Euphoric Of Abnormal Horde" is so groovy.  Is this all written by you and then the members of the band learn the parts?  Can you explain your process a little bit?

- Yes, that's right, I write all the music, then my friends follow the songs I wrote, that's how my band works

Indonesia has been known for years to have some of the sickest Brutal Death Metal bands.  Is Slam having a take-over there currently like it is here in the states?

- I don't think so, here there is a very good balance between Slam Death Metal and Brutal Death Metal, of course I also like a lot of BDM bands

What are a few upcoming Indonesian slam bands we should watch for?

- there are several bands that I think are very good, BLEDOS VECTOMY, my friend's band, they combine SLAM and HIP HOP, then there is TEBAS, I know them, their album was released earlier this year and it's great, Burp's vocals are like CEPHALOTRIPSY, honestly, I really strict in terms of choosing vocals, I prefer bands that use the EXHALE technique because it is more challenging and difficult, I am also a user of the EXHALE technique

Who did the artwork for the album?

- Aziz Blckstry, in my opinion, he is a great album cover artist, I love his work

CHECK OUT MORE HERE

How did you get into this kind of music?  What are some of your other passions?

- At first I only liked heavy metal bands, like Linkin Park, Avenged Sevenfold, Deftones, then Deathcore, but now I don't really like deathcore, then I explored other music and I entered the SLAM, BDM and GORE GRIND scene, I really like it , and snare sound, guttural burp vocals, groovy guitar part, blast beat, I really like it
- I also like other genres such as Shoegaze (Cocteau Twins, Slowdive), Pop/Britpop (The Smiths), Slow/Prog Rock (Dream Theater, Yngwie Malmsteen, Crimson Glory), Thrash Metal (Slayer, Megadeth), Death Metal (Cannibal Corpse, Dying Fetus, Deicide, Massacre, 200 Stab Wounds, Blood Incantation, Necrot) and many more

Is more music coming?  Any tours coming soon?

- yes, I plan to make material that leads to old school SLAM such as Devourment, New Wave Old School Slam
- I don't have any tour plans yet, just playing domestically, because I'm still adjusting, I now have to take on guitar and vocals because I don't have full members anymore, so it's possible that my next musical material will be adjusted to make it easier to play guitar and vocals, this band has been officially running as a One Man Band for now

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer these questions!

- You're Welcome! Salute!

Anything you'd like to say to your fans?

- I love & respect all of you music listeners, especially SLAM, BDM, and Death Metal, I will always accept your criticism and suggestions, long live DEATH METAL, I hope you are always healthy and united to fellow metalheads! \m/ , Thank you!

Asphyxiate - Self Transform From Decayed Flesh - 2013 - New Standard Elite

Art by Jonrinz Art

I interviewed Asphyxiate (HERE) before I had even heard more than one song from this album.
THIS SONG
I had hoped that the whole album would be as brutal and addicting as that one song.  Was I right?

I must be getting good at predicting these things.  Asphyxiate have produced what they promised, a return back to the roots of Indonesian brutality that is sure to have any Brutal Death Metal fan banging their head in recognition and agreement.
"Self Transform From Decayed Flesh" would have stood above many other 2013 releases on riffage and songwriting alone.  Giving the album an extra boost is the impressive production and mastering from Josh Welshnam.  Previously known as the brains behind promising one-man band, Autonomy, he has foreshadowed here a promising career behind the controls, helping bands achieve their prime sound and brutality.
The Disgorge-esque stylings of this record are unrelentingly punishing.  The opening track, "Suffered in Vivisection" begins with a slower riff, as if to warm you up for whats to come.  The mood is undeniably set, and the second half of the song throws you into a whirlwind of fast blasting riffs under half-discernible gutturals that are enunciated just enough to make you want to read along.
The whole album is riff after riff, providing little time to rest.
Josh (Guitar, Vocals) shows how it should be done.  It is mind-blowing listening to this when you realize the guitar and vocals are coming from the same person.  He has a real knack for changing up patterns between guitar and vocal riffs.  His lack of diversity in the vocal department is saved by a few occurrences of layered vocals, and his scrupulous, punctual enunciation, going along nicely with his guitar-work.
Yogi, the man behind the drums, has obviously been doing this for a long time.  Try as you may, and I have tried, but you will not find a dull moment in his perfect drumming performance.  The drums, for me, are what make this album.
A common complaint of mine is again an issue here: I wish the bass guitar (Adi) was a little more audible.  I here it thickening up the low-end, I just cannot tell if it is doing much else.  Being able to keep up at this pace is a feat of excellence for any bassist, turn it up!

The amazing artwork, from Jonrinz Art, gives an accurate visual representation of how I feel when this album is playing: I am being melted and torn into a thousand more versions of me!  Transformed from my decayed flesh!  He has many pieces of similar detail, check them out HERE.

Asphyxiate have been around for over 10 years now.  I am overcome with sadness and surprise when I say this is my first time hearing their music!  My next step is to check out their entire back-catalogue.
For now, I am thoroughly enjoying "Self Transform From Decayed Flesh," as should you!

Internal Amputation - Slam Gang - 2012 Demo - Alengka Management

Internal Amputation is a relatively new four piece Indonesian brutal death metal band.  Their sound reminds me of a mix of a few of my favorites.  I cannot seem to put a name to it, but it is definitely worth checking out.  Technical and tight drumming and guitar riffs that are solidified by the backbone of the bass guitar.  Simple but awesome vocals, reminiscent of Vulvectomy.  Also, some slams that get pretty slow and pretty repetitive but manage to keep you interested.

There are three songs on this demo, two of which begin with samples.  The samples are not too long and they work well with the vibe of the demo.  The guitar in particular is very creative and at times reminds me of totally different genres of music!  “Defectus In Utero” has some crazy awesome guitar riffs, and then drops into a groovy, slammy outro.  This demo has an impressively professional sound.  I cannot wait for more.  For a band’s first release, this is pretty amazing.

Gencuy Brutal Art Interview

Gencuy Brutal Art creates art for brutal death metal and black metal bands and does a very good job at it.  He operates out of Indonesia, a place with a constantly expanding and somewhat controversial brutal death metal scene.  I was happy to find out that there is also an incredibly supportive community for this kind of art in Indonesia.

————————————————————————————————————

Cerebral Reviewment-  Hello and thank you for answering some questions! Could you let everyone know a little about yourself and how long you have been drawing?

Gencuy-  Hello, Gencuy is my nickname, not my real name. I am 21 years old now and living in Bandung, a city in Indonesia, I make the design work for the underground community. Mainly death metal bands and also black metal bands all over the world. I’ve been drawing since childhood. I learned to draw on my own and I never followed a special way or went to art school.

CR-  How long have you been into brutal art? What got you started?

G-  I started BrutalArt a few years ago, around 2007. So to say I have 5 years working on BrutalArt. I really like extreme music, especially DEATHMETAL and BLACKMETAL, but I am not proficient in music. So I wanted to do something, so I can get involved in this music community. BrutalArt makes me a part of the community and music that I love.

CR-  In your opinion, can brutal art ever take things too far by being too gross or obscene?

G-  What I’m expressing in BrutalArt is something unusual for the artist. The other side of life… murder, prostitution, death, deception, and other things that people think should not be talked about. Such things are discussed in the songs of Black Metal Death metal. I also always have a theme I wish to convey in my brutal art.

CR-  I always love when you post pictures of your sketches before they are finished. Can you describe your process a little bit from start to finish? How long do you usually take on a project?

G-  The process I go through to make BrutalArt is; begin by thinking of a theme that will be created, then create a sketch on paper using a pencil, and then proceed to use the inking pen, and after finishing with the image on paper, I input the image into the computer using a scanner, to subsequently be edited and the last process is in the Photoshop program. Time it takes to make a work can be varied according to mood, but I always try to be professional, doing a work within 1 week. If I’m not busy it could be faster, and may take longer if I am busy.

CR-  Do most bands tell you exactly what they want or do they give you a lot of freedom to draw what you want?

G-  Clients and bands are free to give the concept of what they want. I’ll try to make a work like what they want. I usually ask for tracks and lyrics of their songs, it really helps me to understand the character of the band who I am working with.

CR-  What or who are some of your biggest influences?

G-  The Death metal community, and love of music is the most influential for me. Surely the people who always support me and love brutal art!

CR-  Being from Indonesia, you probably do not have a lack of bands wanting to work with you. What is the art scene like there? Is there a lot of other brutal art? What is mainstream art like there?

G-  Yes there is a wonderful art community in my city of Bandung. Its name is Illuminator. There are many talented artists, each with a different style, and I know them. You need to know there is a shortage in my country people and bands who understand the artwork. They can not appreciate a work, and there is still a lot of piracy with the artwork here.

The Illuminator is an underground community that organizes events and exhibitions for artists.

CR-  Who are your favorite artists?

G-  Some of my favorite artists are Mark Riddick, Mike Majewski, Daniel Corcuera, Matt daughter, Christophe Moyen, Bin Bautista, Jeff Zornow, Nat Jones and my friends Derby, Candra (monmonart). I really like the artwork in black and white style, and they do it very well. That’s the reason I idolize them.

CR-  Do you have a favorite piece you’ve done?

G-  I love all my works. But, I’ve made a work that I love very much, and I will not sell it … I gave it the title “GOD BETRAYER”

CR-  Anything thing else you’d like to say to fans or aspiring artists?

G-  Do something that you like, because that would be something you are proud of yourself for doing.

Keep it Brutal \ m /

CR-  Thanks a lot!

Parasitic Ejaculation- Rationing the Sacred Human Remains - 2013 Ghastly Music

Artwork by Votd Art, out of Indonesia

Santa Cruz, California's Parasitic Ejaculation are here to infect us all....... with their semen.  I never thought it could burn so good!  Combining hard hitting slams with technically proficient riffs that turn on a dime, the band's debut does not get boring.

The band has been around for a couple of years, releasing two demos, however, neither of which were quite as powerful as the complete package that is Rationing the Sacred Human Remains.  It features that raw feeling that I haven't felt since The Gurchick Tree, only with enough clarity to hear everything that is going on.  The songwriting on the album is very complex and unpredictable, employing tempo changes and pinch harmonics out of nowhere.

Another prominent aspect of this album are the vocals.  Jonathan Neel has a couple different techniques used here, one is more bree bree and reminds me a bit of Human Mastication, The other is a phlegmy, deep guttural, think Engorgement.  They are equally used and always impressive.
Bassist Josh Schwartz provides a thick, powerful low end throughout.  He also plays some very memorable and audible riffs.  Perhaps most at the forefront of this record are drummer Donovan Dettle and guitarist Mike Mostachetti.  Together, the 25 minutes of creativity flow through them as if it were simple to write catchy, memorable, fun music for people to grunt over.  Well, they've done it.

The whole album feels well put together and unfolds like a well written novel.  There is a classic toungue-in-cheek vibe here, largely due to some of the samples used.  Remember Short Bus Pile Up's album Repulsive Display of Human Upholstery?  (If you don't, stop reading now)  That is the vibe I am talking about, a totally addicting, evil yet fun feeling.  Speaking of Short Bus Pile Up, Vocalist Tyler Sharpes makes an appearance on this album, as well as Logistic Slaughter's Andrew Smith and Zack Shaw, who is Phalloplatsy.

Either we have slippery, sliding guitar riffs or brutal slams.  Everything is here and everything fits.  The individual songs are catchy and creative.  Exuding Degenerative Cadavers is one of my favorites; endless groove complimented by steady, disgusting gutturals.

This 25 minute album is a very impressive debut full length for Parasitic Ejaculation that will be a hard one to top. I cannot wait to hear what's next!

Unsheathed - 2011 Promo

This four piece band comes from Indonesia and packs a punch. A punch that hurts and leaves you confused. The perfect promo punch, I guess. Three songs makes up this promo, two of which leave you begging for diversity and the third gives you just that. The first two tracks, “Replenish Falsity" and “Hideous Paraplegic" are uniquely one dimensional, some would say boring. I suggest listening closely, as many times as it takes (not many) to realize that they are not boring, they don't showcase amazing songwriting, but hardly boring. They are still catchy with their repeating tremolo riffing and the pounding undertones of the drums balanced out by light and fluffy cymbal crashes.  Don’t get me wrong, the recording is pretty bad but it is easily overlooked.

A little more than halfway through “Replenish Falsity" there is a dissonant part with strummed chords that pretty muched ruined the song for me.

The vocals, which I quite enjoy, start to remind me of early Decrepit Birth(the only Decrepit Birth in my book) on "Hideous Paraplegic", a track with the same formula consisting of tremolo melodic riffs and rather generic drumming.

"Masochist Genocide" seems to come from nowhere and sounds like a different band entirely. It is the best song by far, nicely mixing in slightly more technical stuff with their unique, weird, melodic riffs and impressive gutturals. This track saves this promo and only gets better.

Unsheathed is an awesome name.
Very excited to hear what these guys do!
Check out the promo HERE
