Execrated - Condemnation To Eternal Punishment - Anopsys Records- 2013

Artwork by ART OF GORE

These days, if you listen to a lot of Brutal Death Metal, your ears ought to perk up when you hear of a new group coming out of the Philippines.  The country has been widely known, to the underground metal community, as a hotbed of Brutal Death Metal talent for almost 10 years now.  Next to bands such as Human Mastication, Disastrous, Sagrado, Lamaw, Pus Vomit, Perverse Molestation, Down From The Wound, and countless others that you don't know of yet, Execrated prove with this 4 song release that they are well on their way to standing amongst Brutal Death Metal legends. Now, let's hope another release is on its way.
Execrated used to go by the name Degrade Incinerate but hadn't released anything to speak of until they recently changed their name to Execrated.  Execrated means to be hated or to be thought of as evil.  Degrade Incinerate is a mash-up of two verbs, the first meaning to break something down into smaller parts and the second meaning to completely burn something to ashes.  I am all for the name change.  The band is about to release "Condemnation To Eternal Punishment" through Anopsys Records, and you'd be committing a crime to not pick this up.
This EP is four tracks of fast paced Brutal Death Metal with just enough originality thrown in to excite us for a proper full length.  At times the guitars come across a bit too staticky and fuzzed out, with being as quick as they are.  This production flaw is quickly thrown to the wayside when the raw power of the vocals perfectly carries every riff, effortlessly transitioning alongside the relentless drums.
Every time your ear catches the 'ping' of that beautiful snare in the sparsely occuring slammier parts, you are reminded of why you love this nonstop, belligerent, groove inducing style of music.
All the necessary ingredients are here folks; The songwriting is here, the vocals are here, the riffs are here, all confidently flowing above the concrete steady drums.
This is a very detailed EP and begs multiple listens.  In doing so, you won't be disappointed.  You also wouldn't be too pressed for time.  I mean, you could listen to this whole thing four times in one hour.
"Condemnation To Eternal Punishment" is a very solid release, it's just way too short.  No excuses not to grab this one!

Interview with Stephen Espiritu of Sagrado - 2012

I last interviewed Stephen Espiritu, vocalist of Sagrado, a four piece brutal death metal band from the Phillippines, when the band did not yet have any plans in motion for new music (INTERVIEW HERE).  The band’s music really excited me but it had been awhile since they released any new material.  Not to worry, they have a full length about to be unleashed!   I was pleased to have a chance for this follow-up interview with Stephen!

—————————————————————————————————————-

Cerebral Reviewment-  Any lineup changes since we last spoke?

Stephen Espiritu-  Yes, actually we lost a brother because hes going to other country , which is Taiwan. Because of his new career in life and we wish him all the best . Currently our Guitarist was replaced by Justin Devilla .

CR-  What will the new album be called?

SE-  That will be "Mass Suffering of a Human Being".. We and Dmitry thought of the title :)

CR-  When will it be released?

SE-  I think it will be released on June..and we are excited about it

CR-  How far along are you?

SE-  As far as we know we are not yet that far along, we never think of being far, we just want to spread our brutality to death metal fans.  We just love what we are doing and currently we hope that our band lasts long, Being sick all the time.

CR-  How does the bands new material differ from your old stuff?

SE-  I think my vocals differ quite a bit because if you notice on our demo, I was too shy to express what style I was going to blow, but now I have learned a lot of styles to express what the song really wants. Expect very low gutturals, high pitch squeels and alien predator gurgle sounds.  Combining the old and new style of Brutal death music

CR-  Who did the art?

SE-  Ah great question bro. It’s Andrey Kroms!!  If you don’t know him you must check him out and refer him to other bands, His killing hands were very perfect to the passion of what he was creating, I always dreamed of being an artist like him.  So fucking Awesome!

CR-  Will you have new merch?

SE-  Yes and we are very excited but of course we are focused on the album first, after that we will show the new merch.

CR-  Any touring plans?

SE-  Yes we are planning to tour after the album is complete and released!   Hope to tour there also if we had a chance bro :) please refer us to people!

CR-  How’s the scene doing there?

SE-  The scene here is very great , we have lots of events here .  They are very supportive and not only that, every band here is very tight friends with the other bands.

CR-  Could you talk a little about your lyrics?  Your vocal style and how much you practice?  Any tips for vocalists?

SE-  The lyrics is all about Asylum, people killing each other because of money, Gang Rape..Corruption, And when it comes to vocal style I mix it with new school and old stuff. And also I adapted a grind style. When I practice I usually sing our famous alphabet song , its funny but effective.. Sing the alphabet song in Guttural way. You must try it bro!

CR-  How did you guys start working with Andrey Kroms?  Will there be there more artwork in the cd booklet?

SE-  Andrey Kroms is a great guy , because he and Dmitry from Anopsys Records (Inherited Suffering) are very close friends he said that Andrey Kroms wanted to do a work of art for our upcoming album.  We are amazed with the artwork that he has done for Sagrado.   If they are reading this interview, we are thankful to the guys that made this project( Andrey and Dmitry)

CR-  What is one of your favorite scenes/regions that you have always wanted to go visit because of the bands there?

SE-  That will be Manila, our home town because we started here.  Purely I want to visit Davao because there are many friends there that we would like to share the stage with one night, like Human Mastication, Lamaw, Disastrous, Erectile Dysfunction, Perverse Molestation, Last Vigil.

CR-  Thanks a lot Stephen!!! Cannot wait for more Sagrado!!

SE-  You are welcome bro, keep up the good work to your webzine.. it helps death metal bands a lot!!  2 thumbs from us bro!

Disastrous - Severe Suffering - 2012 Brute! Productions

This Filipino band had a lot to live up to since there last release “Slavery of Disgusting Torture”. They fell short of doing so, but I think it is still worth checking out.
The recording on this album sounds sonically better and the vocals are mixed in nicely, but there is still a lack of range and dynamic.  The first track, “Kingdom of The Lifeless” is a little disorienting upon first listen.  It takes some effort to make sense of; everything feels like it has been hacked up and poorly put back together.  This song serves as a weak start to an album I was very, very excited to hear.  “It’s Your Turn To Kill” said one song to the next.  It does kill, in a few ways.  The drumming is consistent and the guitar is relentlessly, verging on messily, flying all over.  The bass guitar starts to shine through here also, but not anywhere near enough.  At 2:10 things change ever so slightly to an awesome pounding section that does not overstay it’s welcome, leading us into an abrupt ending.

"Liquid Flesh Splattered" opens with a generic sample of a screaming woman and wet noises, one could assume liquid flesh.  Luckily I have surprisingly not grown tired of these stupid samples unless of course they go on for to long.  The melodic riffs of the guitar are all over the place and chaotic. I think this record could use different recording/micing techniques to get cleaner sounds and better fitting tones.
At around 1:35 the creativity that is Disastrous returns.  Simple yet effective brutality.  Drums do weird super splashing things and is a little distracting.
"Removal of Spinal Cord" is a pretty boring song in context with the rest.  This is definitely one of those albums that should only be listened to as a whole, and it takes some warming up to.  The title track packs a refreshing punch that will wake you up.  Starting with the funky bass fill that might even make you dance a little bit.  This is my favorite track so far because I can hear the bass, and it’s groovy. It also has bits and pieces of weirdness that only Disastrous can put in a song and call it Brutal Death. Songs like this are why I fell in love with this band in the first place.
"Death Dimension" begins with a legitimately frightening sample and then proceeds to bash your skull in with what is apparently a kick ass second half of this album.  "Skull Fucking Pulverized" stays creative and catchy.  This band is good at stringing together parts and riffs and making them seem like they fit.  The last song is called "9.9" and it is almost that long.  I expected a six minute sample or something but luckily it starts off with some pretty interesting stuff and kind of reminds me of Disgorge.  Then, after some silence, our friend "Freddie The Blamer" shows up with some classical guitar skills.  This serves as a rather nice ending to a rather OK album.
My biggest complaint has to be the drums.  They always feel rushed or off in some way and come off bland and annoying.  While Severe Suffering has some gems, as a whole it just does not flow.
Still, Disastrous prove they are back at it and they are not fucking around.

The band has since signed to Sevared Records and are finishing work on their next album.
