Interview with Ian Dunford of Habitual Defilement - 2011

Habitual Defilement are a Brutal Death Metal outfit from Minnesota that has been way too quiet recently and have a full length album due out soon!
Here is an interview with Vocalist of Habitual Defilement, Ian Dunford.

Cerebral Reviewment-  Thank you Ian for taking the time for this interview!  I really liked Habitual Defilement’s EP “The Abolished Arise” and I cannot wait for the full length!!  Can you give a quick history of the band for those who don’t know?

Ian Dunford-  Thanks for digging our EP!  We’ve been around since July 2011.  Had a few line up changes before material was even written until October 2011 rolled around and Raffo (Guitarist of Habitual Defilement & Endometritis) and I met on Facebook and we discussed him joining Tim Bee (Paroxysmal Butchering) and I in Habitual Defilement and he agreed.  We released our EP in January/ February of 2012 on Infinite Regress Records (AUS) & Sevared Records (USA), these labels also will be releasing our full length! Nick Shores (Bassist of Habitual Defilement) came into the project around the time on our EP was released, so no he is not on it but will be on our full length and many more releases.

CB-  With members who live nowhere near each other, what is the band’s writing process like?

ID-  The writing process in Habitual Defilement is what I believe to be everyone’s style of writing.  Raffo has a creative force of Death Metal in that brain of his so we start with Guitar ideas, tracking and sending tracks back and forth.  Once all Guitar tracks are recorded we would have Tim Bee make up drum patterns to go along with the guitar riffs that Raffo had brought forward.  Once we have Guitars & Drums mixed we would move forward with Bass & Vocal tracking/ recording.  Once Nick recorded a few rough tracks of a few full length songs I knew this album was gonna sound not just sick but really solid and tight.

CR-  How long have you been doing brutal death metal vocals?  What got you started?

ID-  I’ve been singing Death Metal since about 2005.  My first project was called DIABOLICAL SLAUGHTER back in San Diego, California which is my hometown.  We were around 5+ years going through line up changes, shows and playing with national acts.  I gained a lot of experience and we put the band to rest in May 2011.

CR-  Who are some of your favorite vocalists that you look up to?

ID-  Vocalist I look up to…I would have to say Matti Way & Aj Magana Ex-Disgorge USA & George ‘Corpsegrinder’ Fisher of Cannibal Corpse.  Been a Cannibal Corpse fan since I was 8 years old and I’ll never stop.  Got into Disgorge around freshmen year of High School once I started to get out into the Local/ Underground San Diego scene.

CR-  Can you speak a little bit about your love of marijuana?  Is this a passion the other band members share?

ID-  Our support for the legalization of Cannabis is not just within smoking consumption wise. We support all the uses Cannabis has to offer.  Currently only Raffo and I are the only ones who have fun with Mary Jane.

CR-  I understand you enjoy writing and reading poetry?  What are your lyrics like and what inspires you to write them?

ID-  Lyric writing wise, I try and strive for Brutal Death Metal songs that tell stories, yeah it's cool to have a wicked track title and all, but it’s the lyrics behind the title that tell you what the song is about.  I personally, like to write about Humanity, War, Plagues…pretty much revolving around the era of the 1200’s-1800’s, reason being is that Humans have evolved and matured in so many ways over the course of History and I want to bring not only sick music but I want to bring people an album where their gonna say “Damn did you hear those lyrics?!  Did you hear the slam with that blast beat at the end!?”  When you pick up our album this August…you will understand.

CR-  How do you feel about bands in the scene not using lyrics at all?

ID-  They need to go back to School.

CR-  Habitual Defilement’s full length is due out in August.  What can you say about it?  What will it be called?

ID-  For this being our first full length but our second release…were bringing our fucking A Game Part II THE REDEMPTION of PAST SUPREMACY. Part III – 2013 that’s a whole other story…

CR-  Any plans for a Tour after the Release?

ID-  2013… Were gonna light a match under the Undergrounds ass.

CR-  So I understand the band is about to announce news about a drummer.  Is this a full time drummer or only live or only studio?  How much can you reveal?!

ID-  Our New Drummer is I guess you could say Full Time Guest, everyone will know who this fuck he is in time…But let me make this clear, we may be a Studio Band but I’ll tell you right now…You’ll see a Full LIVE Line up of HABITUAL DEFILEMENT with this guy come 2013.

CR-  Are you working with any other bands currently or have any side projects of your own?

ID-  I currently just recording guest Vocals for my good friend Aleq Sheets for his up coming 1 Man project called EXECRABLE DIVINITY, Be sure and search that shit up on Google and check us out on Track #3 of his EP “The Consequence Of Existence”http://execrabledivinity.bandcamp.com/.  I’ve also been offered a huge opportunity to do Guest Vocals for a 2013 Album release from a big underground Icon, more news will come when the time is right for that too.

CR-  Well thanks Ian for the Interview, is there anything you would like to say to everyone reading this?

ID-  Yeah be sure and check us out on Facebook.com and pick up our full length this August on Infinite Regress Records & Sevared Records!  Tony Koehl is doing our CD cover too so more of a reason to buy it!  Smoke Weed, It's Not Crack!
